Luxembourg is a small country that over the last few years has become an increasingly popular expat destination due to its stable and growing economy. Many expats prefer International schools due to their generally high reputation, credibility and their qualification flexibility.
The majority of the International Schools will offer either the English style of curriculum or the International Baccalaureate (IB). There are also a handful of French orientated international schools in Luxembourg if French is the preferred primary language. Some schools, such as the European School and the Waldorf School, provide teaching in more than one language.
ST GEORGE’S INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
Curriculum: English style
St George’s stands as one of the most well-known international schools in Luxembourg and serves students from all over the world. It is one of only three schools worldwide to have passed the Patron’s Accreditation and Compliance Survey conducted by the Council of British International Schools (COBIS) in early 2017. As the name may suggest, the school follows an English/Welsh curriculum that has an additional international focus. St George’s is supported by the Ministry of Education and the City of Luxembourg. Expectations of students are high, although this is matched by a very high level of teaching and support.
At the primary level, students follow the English/Welsh National Curriculum. However, they also incorporate elements of the International Primary Curriculum to enhance the child’s international awareness. The curriculum at this level entails a variety of core subjects including English, French, numeracy and PE. The high school curriculum once again follows the English format, with (I)GCSEs and A-Levels the curriculums followed. In terms of attainment, the school produces very good results. In 2016, 61% of 223 students attained an A or A* pass rate. These results come through skilled teaching and in part due to smaller class sizes, which allows increased personal support.
As well as being strong from an academic standpoint, St Georges offers facilities and initiatives that invite students to flourish outside of the classroom. The school offers an array of extra-curricular activities for all ages in the field of sports, arts and languages. They have 4 specially equipped music classrooms filled with a plethora of instruments for students to play. The school also has a band for different music groups and also offers choirs, dance clubs and martial arts as extra-curricular activities.
Admission Policy & Fees
Parents and students interested in St George’s are encouraged to visit and meet with the school before submitting a formal application to evaluate whether the school is best for your child. Application forms should then be filed and submitted to the school along with the €750 fee. The annual fees for students increase through the years, rising to €14,825 in years 10-13.
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF LUXEMBOURG (ISL)
Curriculum: IB, English, ISL Diploma
A member of the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO), the ISL is truly an international school and learning environment. They have invested heavily in state of the art facilities to give students every chance of success. English is the primary language of the school, however, they do run mother-tongue programmes to ensure international students continue to learn their home language and heritage. Languages are viewed as very important in the learning cycle at ISL which is highlighted by the fact that all teachers are multi-lingual.
The school has its own curriculum for the lower school that aims to develop and nurture students into middle and high school. The curriculum considers the international diversity of the student base. Therefore, the lower school curriculum is based on values that the school has developed through the years. The student will then progress through middle school, studying a range of subjects, followed by the upper school. This is where students can participate in IGCSEs, A levels or the IB programme. This decision should be based on interests, ability, middle school results and future career/university aspirations.
ISL provides a variety of activities for students to immerse themselves in outside of the classroom. The school offers students the chance to become involved in the arts by joining one of the many choirs or bands or participating in a number of musicals and performances that are scheduled throughout the year. There are also many sporting teams for students to get involved with including football, athletics and tennis. Perhaps the unique extra-curricular activity comes in the form of the ISL News TV channel. This is run entirely by students and is broadcast on the social media site YouTube. ISL also provides weekend and after-school activities which can be a major help for working parents.
Admission Policy & Fees
Interested families and students are encouraged to inquire and apply online at the earliest time possible within a year from the potential start date. A visit to the school is mandatory for any acceptance into the school, which is an aspect to consider. Testing and face to face interviews are commonplace in the final stages of the admission process. In instances where demand is high and spaces are limited, waiting lists are used. However, when this is the case, the school does its best to liaise and co-operate with families. In terms of annual fees for ISL, these can rise to €16,820 in grades 9-12.
