Sydney has a very wide variety of areas and neighbourhoods; its real estate market is notoriously expensive but there is a wide range of properties. The commute possibilities are vast; all you need is an Opal card and you’re set to travel on Sydney’s buses, ferries, light rail, metro, and the latest development – Skytrain.

We are back now with more relocation advice for this fantastic city that is voted amongst the top cities in the world to live in. In this guide, we cover some of Sydney’s popular areas to stay in as an international tax expat and the pros and cons of each, including transport and facilities available for ambitious transfer pricing and corporate tax professionals.
The Eastern Suburbs
Coogee is an area with plenty of rental properties and is ideally suited for single professionals and couples as well as families with children. The beach is a few minutes walk and there are plenty of cafes nearby. The commute for dedicated tax and transfer pricing professionals to the CBD area is a minimum of 33 minutes by bus and train or 45 minutes by bus. Driving takes around 25 minutes. The area’s density means that properties mostly include apartments, with some houses as well.
Bondi is a suburb ideally situated with Sydney’s iconic beach just around the corner, a popular getaway for hardworking tax and treasury professionals. The properties are mostly high-rise apartment blocks surrounding the beach, providing stunning views of the coast. The commute for tax professionals to the CBD is around 40 minutes by bus or train. Driving is a shorter commute, though Bondi’s notorious road traffic makes it unfavourable to drive around during rush hours. The area has a variety of cafes and restaurants, particularly due to its popularity amongst both residents and tourists.
Point Piper is probably Sydney’s most affluent area; it is characterised by its stunning harbourside location, biking trails, yacht docks and upscale cafes. Properties are mostly luxury houses and apartments that are modern and expensive. The area is not well-serviced by public transport, so a car or bicycle will be necessary to commute to the CBD area.
The Northern Suburbs
Domain published a report last year stating that the best suburbs for families are in the north of Sydney. Davidson, Middle Cove, Lavender Bay, Killarney Heights and Waverton top the list of family-friendly suburbs mentioned in the report. Liveability factors such as crime rate, open space and education were taken into consideration. All in all, these suburbs provide excellent facilities and services for families and children, giving tax expats peace of mind if they are planning a family relocation.
Waverton is a northern suburb that is popular for its classy feel and proximity to the CBD area, which is ideal for tax expats who are planning to relocate. The commute is quite short at approximately 10 minutes by bus, train or ferry across the harbour, making it ideal for professionals as well.
If you enjoy city centre life, then areas such as Paddington, Darlinghurst and Surry Hills are all very close to the CBD area and provide a wide range of properties, both older and contemporary. Beautiful parks such as Centennial Park and Moore Park are at walking distance, providing great areas for walks or weekend barbecues.
Paddington or “Paddo” is only 3 kilometres away from the CBD area and has a distinct Victorian style with endless rows of historical terraces. The area has plenty of restaurants as well as shops and boutiques on the popular Oxford Street for transfer pricing and corporate tax workers to explore. This is an area with a lively feel that may not suit those looking for more quiet neighbourhoods. Buses are frequent but the CBD area is within walking distance as well!
Darlinghurst is renowned as a trendier part of Sydney, being home to artists and creative professionals as well as art galleries and museums. There is a variety of pubs and clubs, making it a very sociable place that is ideal for singles and professionals but not for families with children or those looking for tranquillity. Due to the area’s high density, properties tend to be slightly smaller, featuring a mix of apartments and terrace houses. The CBD area is only a stone throw away!
Surry Hills is similar to the above when it comes to its buzzing atmosphere of shopping, bars and clubs. One of its important features is central train station which can get you to the airport in 13 minutes! The neighbourhood is also very close to the CBD area, either a walk or through public transport. Prince Alfred Park is a lovely feature of this neighbourhood as well.
Balmain is a Western suburb of Sydney that is increasingly popular due to its eccentric feel; the blend of historical facades and modern architecture make this neighbourhood well sought-after by residents who appreciate a bit of luxury. The area is complemented by trendy cafes, bistros and pubs, and residents highlight the “community feel” as a positive. Properties are a mix of apartments and houses, some of which provide beautiful views to the harbour. Commuting to the CBD area takes around 20 minutes by bus or ferry, though many people in the area choose to drive or cycle to work.
This beach-side suburb is a real treat; the sea views are breath-taking and shops, cafes and restaurants are at walking distance. Manly is suitable for both single professionals as well as families. Properties are on the pricier side in comparison to other Sydney suburbs, however this is made up for by the atmosphere, facilities, beautiful beaches, and proximity to central Sydney. The commute to the CBD area is only 18 minutes on the fast ferry across the harbour, which is probably as scenic and unique as a work commute gets!
